“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing”. 2 Timothy 4:6-8

James Washington Hargrove transitioned peacefully at age 72 on September 1, 2025, encircled by his wife and brothers-in-law at the SECU Lifecare Center in Bolivia, NC. He was born November 21, 1952, in Maxton, NC to the late Bruce Sr. and Catherine Hargrove but grew up in Raleigh, NC.

James confessed Christ early in life and was a member of the St. George United Methodist Church in Maxton, NC where he played piano for the church services at an early age. After moving to Raleigh, NC he joined the Wilson Temple United Methodist Church and continued with the music ministry. Upon moving to Brunswick County, he joined Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Little Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

James served as Minister of Music for two area churches in Wilmington, NC for more than 15 years. His love for music showed in the way that he played. He took pride in making sure that each note was done correctly with enunciation and notation. He was truly a gifted and trained musician.

James was educated in the Wake County Public School System and graduated from Legion High School. After graduation He joined the United States Army, received an honorable discharge and later joined the United States Marine Corp Reserves. After serving in the armed forces, he returned to North Carolina A&T State University where he received a B.S. Degree in Music. His claim to fame at A&T was that as part of the Band, he was the Drum Major that parachuted onto the field and without missing a beat, commanded the band to attention. He was also a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of forty years: Dr. Reeda Hargrove, his sister, Catherine Cabaniss of Raleigh, NC; sisters-in-law Dr. Joyce Hargrove, Raleigh, NC, Eldress Doris Ann Bryant, Roper, NC and Eva Mae (Shelby) Bryant of Supply. NC. Three brothers-in-law John Herbert and Ellis (Irma) Bryant, both of Bolivia, NC and William Ottis (Helen) Bryant of Wampee, SC and a host of amazing nieces, nephews and friends.
