Mattie Pearl Lucas of Bolivia, NC peacefully entered her eternal rest on April 13, 2026. She was 87 years old. Mattie will be remembered for her giving spirit and unwavering faith. She devoted her life to Christ and inspired many others to do the same.
Born in Bolivia on October 12, 1938, Mattie was the sixth child of Lena and Marion “Mossy” Reaves. As a girl, she spent many days helping her mother keep chickens, crop tobacco and bake cakes. She loved reading and graduated from Brunswick County Training School in 1956. She became a mother early in life and found great joy in raising her only son Clint.
At the age of 18, she eagerly followed her sisters to Washington, D.C. to pursue greater opportunities. It was there that she met her soulmate from Sims, NC—Hubert Lucas. They were married in December 1958 and built a beautiful life together in the DC area. Mattie eventually found her calling as a certified nurse’s assistant specifically supporting children with special needs and Hubert became a street sweeper and sanitation worker for the City. They enjoyed neighborhood block parties with their siblings, attending Clint’s basketball games, and traveling back home in the summers for family reunions.
Over the course of thirty years in DC and Maryland, Mattie and Hubert developed lifelong friendships and grew a community of believers. They had fond memories of evangelizing the power of Christ and supporting Christian causes internationally. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas returned to North Carolina in 1990 and enjoyed a long and fulfilling retirement together. Mattie worked the land, poured into her church family at Love of Christ Church and cared for her mother in her final years. For nearly three decades, she could be found keeping children, tending to her garden, shelling peas, and volunteering at the church. Mrs. Mattie was known as a selfless and caring woman. We are all honored to have benefited from her kind spirit and giving soul.
Mrs. Lucas was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Hubert, parents Mossy and Lena, brothers Howard, Leo, and Marion Jr, and sisters Evelyn, Neicey, and Kit. Mrs. Lucas is survived by her (Son) Clint (Patricia) Bryant of Augusta, GA; (3-Grandchilden) Lauren Bryant of Bolivia, NC, Kristen (Kevin) Smith of Charlotte, NC, and Clint (Donna) Rice of White Plains, MD.; (4-Great-Grandchildren); (3-Great-Great Grandchildren); (Brother) Hubert (Dethwella) Reaves of Bolivia, NC; (Sister) Johnnie Jackson of Washington, D.C. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Reaves Cemetery, (Off of Old Ocean Hwy.) in Bolivia, NC 28422. Burial immediately will follow the services in Reaves Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 5-7PM at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 2586 Old Ocean Highway, Bolivia, NC 28422.
