Ms. Valerie Ann "Val" Chavis

Valerie Ann Chavis, age 55, affectionately known as “Val,” and “Mama V,” of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, was born on February 21, 1971, in Whiteville, North Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of Annie Chavis and the late Russell Frink, and she was the eldest of her siblings.

Valerie was a proud graduate of McKeesport High School, Class of 1989. She furthered her education at Penn West, where she studied Social Work.

Throughout her career, Valerie committed herself to serving others. She devoted 18 years to the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, four years to the University of Pittsburgh, the past year and a half to the Allegheny County Housing Authority. She also served as a Certified Perinatal Educator and a Legal Aid Advocate for Westmoreland County.

Valerie found joy in reading, line dancing, listening to music, and creating treasured memories with her granddaughter, Lumi Chavis.

Valerie will be remembered as a remarkable woman whose kindness and generosity touched the lives of many. She was deeply loved by all who knew her and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Surrounded by the love of her family, Valerie peacefully departed this life on August 23, 2026, at her home. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Frink; her stepfather, Luther Cromerdie; her grandmother, Maggie McNeal; and her uncles, Richard Chavis and Rezell Chavis.

Valerie leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Annie Chavis; her daughter, Joi Chavis; her granddaughter, Lumi Chavis; her sister, Kizzie Chavis; nieces; nephews; extended family; and dear friends.

Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Peoples Funeral Home-Shallotte Chapel, 5190 Ocean Highway West. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, on Hwy.17-S (Tree Swamp Trial across from Crows Creek Golf Course, Carolina Shores, NC 28468.
