Mr. Nathaniel Wesley, Jr., 80 of Whiteville, NC, was born January 13, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida. He departed this life September 2, 2023, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Whiteville, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Nathaniel Wesley, Sr. and Victoria Rodgers Wesley.
After graduating from Douglas Anderson High School, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Florida A&M University (FAMU), Tallahassee, Florida and a Masters of Hospital Administration degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a life member of the National Association of Health Services Executives.
When Nat moved to the District of Columbia (DC) he worked for the DC Hospital Association and went on to serve as a Professor at Howard University. He also worked as the Director of Planning and Marketing at Howard University Hospital.
Prior to his retirement, he worked at FAMU as a faculty member in the School of Allied Health Science, as the Associate Director of the Institute of Public Health and the Director of the Division of Health Care Management. He was involved in the study and research of black hospitals in America since 1977. Also, during that time, he served as a hospital administrator, health management consultant and advisor and counsel for professional development in the health profession.
Nathaniel was editor and publisher of several newsletters and publications including The NRW Report that provided updates in the health industry; The National Black Health Leadership Directory; Professional Development Dictionary and Guide for The Health and Allied Health Professions; and Black Hospitals in America: History, Contributions and Demise, a comprehensive review of the more than 500 black hospitals of the 20th century.
Nat was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Sheila for 31 years. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by a host of family and friends.
Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Sheila Shipman Wesley; sons Nathaniel R. Wesley III (Latasha) of Capitol Heights, MD and Stanley Bernard Phifer (Roxanne) of Tampa, FL; daughter Crystal Burrell-Braddy of Whiteville, NC; sisters Gloria Y. Wesley, Annette Simmons (Joseph), Brenda Henderson (Julius), Joann and Patricia Wesley of Jacksonville FL, Linda Bussey (Tyrone) of Columbia SC; brothers Ruben D. Jackson (Laura) of Atlanta, GA, George and Joseph Wesley of Jacksonville, FL and Bernard Wesley (Darcy) of Alexandria, LA.; grandchildren Nathaniel IV and Xavier Wesley, Shala Kelly, Steve Burrell and Aaron Phifer; a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Northside Church of Christ, 4736 Avenue B, Jacksonville, FL 32309.
In lieu flowers the family is requesting monetary donations be made to Florida A&M University in Nathaniel Wesley, Jr. name.
